“In early New Zealand, Presbyterian congregations were widely scattered and disunited. The first move towards union was the formation of Presbyteries in Otago, Auckland, and Wellington. A conference was held in Dunedin in 1861, at which a basis of union was agreed upon. This conference resumed in Auckland in 1862, for the purpose of setting up a General Assembly. A misunderstanding with the Otago Presbytery over the basis of union caused it to stand aside, and not until nearly 40 years of further negotiations and debate did the Presbyterians North and South of the Waitaki become one Church. The union was consummated on the 31st October, 1901. Dr James Gibb was the first Moderator of the United Church.”
