Date of Birth12 April 1844Date of Death29 March 1902Biographyborn 12 April 1844 at Belfast, Northern Ireland, the son of Mary Livingston of Dromore, County Down and Belfast, and Mr Thomas Fraser of Newcastle upon Tyne and Belfast, died in Belfast in 1849.
wife Sara Smyth born circa 1846 in County Londonderry, the third daughter of the Rev James Smyth, Lakeview, Portglenone, of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, married 10 May 1871, at Drimbolg Reformed Presbyterian Church, by the Rev John Hart, Ballylurgan, assisted by her father, died 4 March 1902 at her sister's house in Dublin, aged 52 years, due to heart disease.
His father died in Belfast in 1849 and his mother remarried to Dr Charles Hurst, 1 April 1851 at Newtownbreda, Knockbreda, County Down.
Both Joseph and his brother Hugh took the name of his step-father, Dr Charles Hurst.
Educated privately, by Dr Charles Hurst and took his Bachelor of Arts at Queen’s College, Belfast.
Studied Theology at the Assembly’s College, Belfast.
Licensed by Eastern Presbytery of Reformed Presbyterian Church of Ireland, 1870.
Ordained as assistant and successor to Rev Samuel Simms, by Southern Presbytery of Reformed Presbyterian Church of Ireland, 19 December 1871.
Served at Loughbrickland, County Down, Ireland.
Inducted Caversham, Dunedin, Dunedin Presbytery, 14 February 1883 — resigned June 1888
It was during his Ministry in 1882 that the Church burnt down.
He was also actively involved in an early trial in Dunedin of Bible in Schools circa 1883.
Returned to Belfast, at Lakeview, Portglenone.
The Synod of Belfast reported that he applied to be received under the care of the General Assembly as a minister without charge, 1889
Called to Fermoy, County Cork, 1890
They had no children
Died 29 March 1902 after a long illness, at the Elms, Fermoy, aged 58 years, just 25 days after his wife.
Both are buried at Castlehyde Cemetery, Parish of Litter, County Cork. (outside of Fermoy)
