Lumsden Balfour Kingston Presbyterian Parish
In the year 1879 Taringatura was a sanctioned charge with boundaries from five miles south of Dipton to Kingston in the North, and westwards as far as Lake Manapouri and Lake Te Anau. Lumsden was considered the centre where a manse could be built. This wide area, and its very scattered population, had a settled minister by 1885.
The schoolroom seemed unsuitable for services, the Courthouse proved too small, and the public Hall was rented for Sundays until 1892 when a newly built Knox Church was opened.
Athol-Garston, formerly a mission station, came into the parish about the 1940s.
In the 1950s parish boundaries included Mossburn to Milford Sound.
First Balfour church built 1902. Balfour was segmented off and back to Lumsden in the late 1960s. Second Church opened 1973, and sold 29 September 2021 with a service for closing and decommissioning held Sunday 3 October 2021.
