He refused a chaplaincy, joining the Auckland Battalion of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (Service No 11370).
He held the rank of Sergeant during military training then Corporal by the time he departed on the troopship for Europe. He fell in a daylight raid on the German trenches in France.
Buried at Pont-Du-Hem Military cemetery, La Gorgue, Nord, France.
