Balmoral Presbyterian Church Balclutha

In 1963 the Balmoral Parish in North Balclutha was split from the Balclutha Presbyterian Parish. Hillend, Barnego and Benhar were included, and a church hall built at 34 Essex St. Services had been held at Hillend since 1870 when it was part of the Lovells Flat Parish. The church complex was opened with a festival of flowers and music. The first minister was the Rev. Stan J. Sims.

The initial interest in flowers continued when, in 1978, a group of Women in the church met to organise a fund raising garden tour. This proved popular in the community, and continued for many years. Another first for the parish was the arrival of a "lady minister," the Rev. Heather Webster, in 1980. "To many in the parish it was a change and a challenge ... and many who weren't too sure soon found that Heather could do her work as well as a man". Heather helped establish Girls' Life Brigade at Balmoral, which served the whole of Balclutha.

The expansive years came to an end. Balmoral amalgamated with St. Andrews, to form again the Balclutha Presbyterian Parish. Last edited by: Andrew Smith
