St James Presbyterian Church Auckland

1857 St. Andrew's Church establishes Sunday Schools on the western side of Auckland where the population was rapidly increasing. A hall was set up on Hobson St. to serve as a Sunday School, day school and worship centre.
1860 Rev. George Brown of Onehunga begins preaching at Hobson St. hall in the evenings.
1861 Rev. John Thom is appointed to supply morning and evening services.
1862 Hobson St. Hall becomes a charge under Rev. Peter Mason, resigns 1862
1865 Church opens
1900 St James Mount Eden Church is designed by Robert Watt and John Mitchell and built on the corner of Esplanade Road and View Road
1964 Union of Beresford Street Congregational Church and St James Presbyterian Church
1965 Presbyterian Church on Union Street burnt down. The Presbyterian and Congregational congregations combine. The Beresford St Church is renamed St James.
1990s The congregation is in decline due to the construction of the motorway system and the building is ageing. The congregation decides to relocate.
1994 Ashton Wylie buys the Beresford St building. It is restored and renamed Hopetoun Alpha.
2012 Closure of the Pacific Island Presbyterian community at St James
2020 The St James Church on Esplanade Road is advertised for sale
