- son of Thomas Briggs Stephen STARNES and Sarah Jane HAINES
married 11 September 1912 Annie Amelia Madeira CRESSWELL, born 15 September 1876, died 27 September 1967
- daughter of William CRESSWELL and Ann Green +
died 10 January 1976 Tauranga, aged 90

He grew up on his father's farm and in 1908 he went to Adelaide for 3 years to Mission Training College, then to Bolivia.
Bolivian Mission 1912, where he married Annie Cresswell who had preceded him there. He contracted malaria and also smallpox and in 1917 returned to New Zealand. Medical reasons precluded his return to Bolivia.
