St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Marton
In 1858 Mr. W. Fox presided at a meeting in Marton at which a motion was appealing to the Presbytery for a minister to the district. Presbytery approved the request and sent an overture to the Church of Scotland asking that a suitable minister be sent.
The Rev. Allsworth, minister of Turakina, came through to hold the first service at Cherry Farm, the home of William Cawood, at Marton.
The Rev. James Cumming, previously the assistant of Montrose, in Scotland, was inducted as the first minister of the parish, May 24, 1865. Services were held in the schoolroom at the corner of High Street and Pukepapa Road. Regular services were held at Marton, Tutaenui and Bulls.Until 1869 Marton was known as Tutaenui and the first resident minister of the parish was known as the minister of Tutaenui.
The church was built in Broadway in November 1871. Mr. T. S. Lambert was the architect and builder. The church could seat 200. The Honorable W. Fox presided at the opening, and the Revs. Elmslie, Honore, Ross and Powell were present and gave addresses.
After the Rev. Cumming resigned, Rev. William Stewart arrived in February 1872. He was inducted into the charge in April 29, 1874.
A church was erected at Upper Tutaenui, 10 kilometres inland from Marton, in 1874. This became the centre of the district. The residents were buried in the church grounds.
Marton called the Rev. David Gordon in 1884. His ministry lasted for 27 years. During his ministry the Sunday School was erected. He was moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in 1894.
Brice and Broad gave a section at Marton Junction in 1907 where a combined church and sunday school was built.
A new church was built at Upper Tutaenui and the old church sold for $50 in July 1912. The church has since disappeared, the graveyard and headstones remained.
The church in Broadway was extended to provide extra seating room, and an extra Bible Class room, in 1955.
The new manse was built in 1977.
Declining rolls closed the Marton Junction church in 1980.
