Caption from book: "The only close-up of a Chinese [man] in the Kirkland Collection probably depicts Yeung Tsung, whose face and hands Don photographed in 1902 to disprove leprosy. Yeung Tsung, an unpopular entrepreneur, worked in an Alexandra market garden, but imported goods as well, causing 'trade jealousy.' His stunted thumb (from a whitlow) and facial blotches (partly from drinking) led to the rumour of leprosy; and fears were heightened by the belief that leprosy was sexually transmitted, and Young Tsung was dallying with a woman. Don, however, found no real stigmata of leprosy and took photographs to show the District Health Officer. [A.
