Caption from book: "Perhaps the most famous image of the New Zealand-Chinese goldseekers. Yu Wing Chung cradling for gold at Elbow Creek, on the Molyneux (Clutha) River near Roxburgh, watched by G.H. McNeur. The photograph, first printed in the Otago Witness of 27 March, 1901, has been republished countless times since. 'Wing Chung,' as he was known, representing the old, poor Chinese 'hatter' at the turn of the century, lived in a cave by the river. [Kirkland Collection; also A.
