Caption from book: "For the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York to Dunedin in 1901, the Chinese arch was erected opposite the Prince of Wales Hotel, Princes Street. Although perhaps inspired by a similar arch erected by the Chinese in Melbourne for the same royal visitors, it symbolised the limited social acceptance and integration achieved by the Otago Chinese goldseekers within the wider community.
