"Memorial Trees
"On Saturday, 11 November 2006, the last of what had been eleven memorial trees was cut down from beside the church. Over the years, the demands for land from the council had dealt to most of the threes with this the last to go.
"Originally planted in a special ceremony on Saturday, 23 August 1919, to mark the end of World War One, the day had been a real community event. Participating was the Deputy Major of Dunedin (J.S. Douglas), the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of NZ, the president of the RSA, and the Kaikorai School Band.
"Four trees were planted to represent Ministers of Kaikorai Church: Revs Alves, Blake, Sutherland, and Minister-elect Hutchinson. In addition the following named trees were planted: Jutland - to the Navy; Jerusalem - Peace Tree; Gallipoli - Soldiers' Memorial Tree; Somme - Soldiers' Memorial Tree; Messines - Soldiers' Memorial Tree; Passchendaele - Soldiers' Memorial Tree; and Bapaume - Soldiers' Memorial Tree.
"Sadly, this last tree had to go due to extensive rot and the certainty that sooner or later a strong wind would bring it down, at a time and in a direction of greatest inconvenience."AcknowledgementThank you to the New Zealand Lotteries Commission and the Synod of Otago and Southland for together providing funding to digitise these images.
