Recollections
AddBy: Alistair Robertson6th Aug 2025 7:24AMDavid Nicol (D. N.) Pryor grew up in Anderson's Bay and, it is assumed, attended the Presbyterian Church there with his family. In his 20's, he became his father's business partner in a fruitier business, Pryor and Sons, in Otago.
At some stage in his late 20's, he began to train for the ministry at the Theological College, being licenced in 5th December, 1899.
In April, 1900, the Reverend D. N. Pryor became assistant minister at Knox Church but was not able to continue too long before being forced to resign due to ill-health. The church hoped he'd recover and return, but it was not to be.
D. N. Pryor died on 7th April, 1901, at his parent's house in Anderson's Bay, almost 12 months to the day after beginning at Knox Church, at the age of 30.
The picture above recognises D. N. Pryor as one of the ministers and missionaries to come out of the Anderson's Bay Parish, short-lived though his official ministry was.
In 1902, David's brother, Thomas, had a son whom he called, David Nicol Pryor. Interestingly, he also grew up to become a Presbyterian minister, and, incidentally, my grandfather.
