Collection DescriptionThe Synod of Otago and Southland is an independent regional body of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. The Synod covers all of the most southern region of New Zealand, south of the Waitaki River. This area of the country was mainly settled by members of the Free Church of Scotland, a group which had split from the main body of the Church of Scotland during the Disruption of 1843. The Southern and Northern Presbyterian churches of New Zealand eventually united into one body at the General Assembly of 1901.
